I have never played golf and never been a fan. However, reading a brief summary of what happened at the Masters seems like a perfect example of what you have written about Clutch and Choke.

I presume you are busy on an interesting and worthwhile project. I am old so have nothing better to do than post silly comments. I was just reading your interview with and obituary of Kurt Vonnegut. I really enjoyed them and they made me nostalgic. In high school I read Player Piano and loved it. For many years I was a big fan of his writing. Reading your two (interesting) articles about him fills me with nostalgia. You are a good writer and I look forward to reading your next work if I live that long. As Kurt said, life is becoming.

What Alec said! Try something new. Maybe your next book can show us how to save civilization. Focus. You've got discipline. You can do it.

Okay, Paul. Most of us love sports; many of us love football and some of us watch the Super Bowl for the commercials. But its time to go beyond Clutch in sports to being Clutch in world affairs. You're a great thinker and I am a big fan. And you may be optimizing sales but not your potential impact. Expand!!! Who's being clutch around Egypt, around the economy or around politics. If our leaders aren't clutch, why are they our leaders. Aaron Rodgers is more likely to end up a spoiled ex-athlete than a leader of the country. Let's talk about something else!!! Your friend, Alec

Alec's comment is excellent. I would also argue that as parents (and as teachers if that applies) we should start teaching children from an early age to be clutch in everyday life. For example, many children choke on tests in school. Tutoring and test prep is probably at least as much about learning to be clutch as it is about learning a particular subject matter or skill.

This is a splendidly poignant and interesting example of clutch. Here's a plot for a short story. A fireman rescues some people from a ledge of a burning building. He loses his grip on one victim, who falls to (the victim's death). The fireman, instead of choking with dismay, continues to calmly and competently save the remaining victims.

Paul: I would argue that being present for the holidays has little to do with sports but with being present (as opposed to giving presents) to those you love and who depend on you not to choke because Aunt Sally insulted Martha, the turkey was burnt, Uncle Charlie got bombed and the like. Being present is an every day requirement of home life, work life and anything that matters. Your examples are excellent, but isn't one of the biggest examples of choking the recent suicide of Mark Madoff? How about Jimmy Stewart's attempt to off himself in "Its a Wonderful Life" where Donna Reed is clutch but he is not. I love sports and they unite the world but your book is about the human condition. The pressure of daily existence requires each of us to be clutch at all times.
